Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as Physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments and disabilities.
Physiatrists combine Physical Therapy and pain treatments to help the patient avoid surgery. The goal of the treatment plan is to maximize physical functioning, greatly decrease or eliminate pain, foster independence, and improve the quality of life for those suffering from a disability, chronic pain and physical impairments.
A Physiatrist is trained to manage a variety of disorders and diseases. In the skilled nursing and long-term care setting, this may include:
- Pain Management
- Neurorehabilitation
- Post-Operative Care
